Description

Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry was established in 1919. Nowadays the University is  structurised into five faculties: Faculty of Agronomy, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Horticulture and Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies.

Department of Wood Science was established by Dean of Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at 1st of August in 1995. Main subject of department follows tasks of wood structure at all levels, wood defects, physical and mechanical properties of wood, destructive and non-destructive testing of properties, drying and hydrothermal modification of wood. Nowadays research intention of department come out the long-termed professional profiling of individual researchers. Mainly the following fields of base and applied research are developed:

  • wood anatomy
  • dendrochronology and dendroclimatology
  • influence of ecological factors of environment on wood formation
  • protection of wood against biotic pests
  • modification of physical and mechanical properties of wood, methods of hydro-thermal protection of wood
  • destructive and non-destructive testing of physical and mechanical properties of wood
  • numerical simulations of coupled physical tasks in bio-mechanics, bio-thermodynamics and bionics

Infrastructure

Department of Wood Science offers sophisticated computing infrastructure for high performance computing and base equipment for testing of material properties on macro scale level. Hardware part consists of many common laboratory machines, namely the universal test machine, convective drying chamber, autoclave and equipments of anatomy laboratory are included.

Computing part consists of specialized applications ANSYS, COMSOL, FlexPDE, MATLAB and HPC clusters formed by powered servers for numerical solution of coupled physical tasks and general multiphysical problems. Young team of scientists and Ph.D. students around Assoc. Prof. Petr Koňas forms competent personal part of established “Laboratory for numerical simulations of complicated physical tasks”. Ten years experiences in computer modeling and numerical solutions of coupled problems in fields of bio-mechanics, bio-thermodynamics and bionics guarantee innovative approach, quality and reliability in solution of pure scientific but also applied challenges.
